Article: Archie Celebrity Redesign |
December 22nd, 2006 |
If you know the story, Jump to the GalleryFor over 50 years, Archie, Betty, Veronica and the gang haven’t changed one iota. You may have seen the news - Thanks to a $400,000 loss in the last year, Archie Comic’s Co have reached a quagmire. Change the merchandise for the YouTube generation, or face the end of the series.
Desparate Measures?
They’ve employed the talents of Steven Butler to give these characters a hip fresh new fa… No… no I’m sorry I can’t go on writing like this. Steven Butler (Talented though he may be) has broken every rule regarding messing with peoples childhood memories. Take a look at his proposed redesigns
here
and
here and tell me your eyes don’t water. Not only are they ugly, show little regard for the character of each individual, but as John Brownly so eloquently commented, Butler’s work robs “Archie’s romantic quandary of its delicious irony (what does it matter which girl Archie picks?)”It’s the training ground for the Blonde/Brunette conundrum. Wars have been fought over which of these utterly identical characters were more attractive, and Steven Butler has tried to take this from us.
Commence hating Steven Butler… Now.
Celebrity Redesign
So maybe it is time for change down at Riverdale, but is Steven Butler really the man for the job? In the interest of preserving our memories of Archie, Betty, Juggy & Veronica, I’ve taken it upon myself to render some alternative character redesigns as they might be conceived by other artists.

Rich Gentlemen Hide Presents - The Archie Celebrity Cover Gallery
This is the original Archie Style. Classic & Sassy! The others are loosely based on this "storyline" |
The RGH version. Also the latest official comic. |
Aw man! I love this guy. There’s something ironic in the fact that Randall Munroe is my absolute favourite comic artist…
|
This wouldn’t be complete without PA.Not much of a stretch really. Gabe and Tycho are basically Archie & Jughead as it stands (which would make Ninteno Betty, and PS3 Veronica…) |
If I could draw like Frank Cho, My life would be complete. I’d Like to hope he’d get a kick out of this, rather than cut off my balls |
This is the riskiest cover for sure. Frank Miller is dark… It takes a sick and twisted individual to come up with corrupt stuff like Sin City. If anyone’s going to hunt me down like the dog that I am, it’d be Frank Miller. Have mercy! |
If you got a kick out of these, consider paypalling me a couple of bucks to help pay for the hosting!

I’m sorry but your hate is misdirected. Steve didn’t make the decision to do this. The company did. He just did what he had to in order to get paid. Sorry chum, but there is no way I’ll hate an artist for trying to survive in a tough industry.
Your xkcd comic needs alternate text.
We are trying to broaden our audience by diversifying our product line. We are continuing to publish classic Archie. This is just a 100 page project. The pages you have seen so far are the tryout pages, except for the cover. The Comic ships in 6 months and we don’t have any finished color pages to show, but the girls aren’t as skinny in the finished pages. When you see the finished product I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
[…] Your Drawn! links of the day are a pair of items related to Archie Comics’ recent announcement of it’s new, more realistic Betty and Veronica. According to a report by John Brownlee on Wired’s Table of Malcontents blog, Archie’s Rik Offenberger is responding to the howls of outrage among the many, many people who haven’t read an Archie comic in years by offering his reassurances that it’s just for four issues. Over at Rich Gentlemen Hide, Lachlan Phillips reimagines the Riverdale gang in the styles of a variety of other artists, including Frank Miller and Mike Krahulik. (Above: I have absolutely no idea who drew this, but it’s used to illustrate John Brownlee’s report, it very well could have been drawn by Dan DeCarlo, and let’s face it: The drawing got you reading, now didn’t it?) […]
[…] By now, most of you are aware of the absolutely horrible redesign for Archie and the rest of the Riverdale Gang that Steve Butler’s perpetrated on behalf of the characters’ publisher. But did you know that Frank Cho, Frank Miller and other comic pros were also approached to provide their own pitches? It’s true! Swear to god!! […]
The PVP version is actually quite good! It keeps a cartoony flavor that’s accessible to all readers but isn’t mired back in early 1950s/60s design.
Can I suggest the obvious…Jaime Hernandez should have this job….now.
In all honesty, the official redesign cover sucks… but I actually find the try-out page a decent makeover.
Yeah the tryout artwork (not the cover) is actually really nice…
It doesn’t work for me as an Archie, but there’s no denying Steven Butler’s skills…
Rik, Thanks for reassuring me
I’ll be sure to pick up a copy when it comes out
Change is sometimes good, and sometimes bad.
Good stuff. The PA cover is hilarious!
Dugg.
Maybe its just me, but Terry Moore, Darwyn Cooke, Collen Doran or George Perez would be awesome in such a makeover. Butler’s designs make me think I shouldn’t be reading and enjoying Archies anymore ’cause I’m way too old and they’re way too young. Classic Betty and Veronica looked like women with girlish attitudes. The new ones look like they’re in junior high, not seniors. Ah well, there’s always past issues to read instead.
Maaaannnnn, I could have told them it’s not the artwork that’s losing the money, it’s the consistent regurgitation of the EXACT SAME STORIES for the past 50 years. people are tired of buying the same archie comix with new cover art. And THAT’s the truth.
Oh , this just sucks…
It’s not Archie that’s in trouble, it’s the whole comic book industry. The first company that brings back a decently written book with 4-color pulp, decent stories and a $1.50 price tag will revive comics. Isn’t there ANYONE who can do this?
Personally, i think its time you all just let go. The only people who own this comic are the publishing house and really if they want to change it its there perogative. There are only 2 things in this world that are certain : change and that things that don’t make a profit don’t last long. Either way I guess your all screwed. If archie doesn’t start making some money soon there may not be an archie all together. Now, im sure none of us are interested in that are we…….
P.S.
I think veronica looks SMOKIN HOT with short hair. Mmmmmmmm…..
Boobs (just for BitClouds Search Engine Optimisation)
Ok dude…….Archie has been a huge part of my existence!. in fact, i was quite a keen Archie comics reader, often visting book exchange stores to swap already read comics with unread ones.
A few things…..the first archie comic was bought out in 1941. That’s actually almost 70years ago.
Now, during this period Archie comics, have always kept up with contemporary culture. always. Just look at the bikini’s and pump shoes on betty and veronica in the 80’s,the peddle pushers of the 1950’s, the psychedelic phrases used in the 1960s editions (round john lennon style glasses etc) and who was that skank cherry blossom (extremely hot) chick that made her debut in the 90’s (the era of badass is sexy)?
so if they feel the need to update to fit in with contemporary society than so be it. That has always been the case. I can totally see jughead as a myspace junkie, reggie as a coke head, and Betty and Veronica discussing sex in a cafe in the city. The only thing that remains a constant…is that Betty wants Archie, Archie wants Veronica…..but he always go back to good ol’ reliable Betty in times of need, and Veronica is a head fuck but dammmmmed attractive. oh yeah, and Jughead is gay.
;)
hahah you’re very passionate about your archies.. thats good to see.. I never had mine organised chronologically… I always just imagined that the gang had wardrobes long enough to house every fashion item from the last 70 years….
One thing’s stayed the same though… (aside from the other things you’ve mentioned) Betty and Veronica are *identical*. This distills the Blonde/Brunette dichotomy down to it’s core elements… into the yin and the yang..
You can’t mess with the program without undesired consequences… A cute short haircut here, and beauty spot there and pretty soon you’re dividing a genetically diverse audience based upon feature preference. The polar love triangle is a time honoured tradition… It’s like trying to improve a Taijitu by adding glitter and polka dots… Cherry Blossom should be a lesson learned!
BTW… jughead’s not gay.. he’s just a loner… heaps zen.. He cares not for the foolish ways of love…
ha! dude he is gay.
anyway, do you remember Midge……. Now she was hot.
Also the Betty Veronica dichotomy……..true true…..but why was Veronica always hotter…..is it the brunette thing? or is it because she beleived she was and always played hard to get, while Betty (the cute blonde) always desperate for Archie’s love seemed ‘weak’ but sweet. The love triangle thing is such a universal concept , hence why the comic always did so well. Cherry Blossom was lame and hard. It almost made the audience have a softer spot for Veronica who seemed ‘pure’ in comparison.see….the lesson…….
anyway, Jughead is not heaps Zen. He’s often grumpy and thinks girls are gross. the only girl he has ever gotten along with is Betty (the tomboy). He uses food as his passion because he cannot come out of the closest and the frustrations he experience result in his typically cynical attitude towards everyone. The dude is an adolescent homosexual that does not quite realise it yet!
yeah midge was cute, but needed a meathead to feel good about herself… classic intellectual inferiority complex… Dime a dozen…
I’ve gotta stop defending people who are obviously gay… I’ve always defended people and said “they’re not gay… they’re just loners” or “they’re just really really nice”
they’ve all turned out to be gay… anyway, thats jugheads choice when the time comes and you needn’t bother pressuring him either way….
Veronica is hotter because guys are beggars for a headfuck… cause brunettes win. always… but mainly because she’s just a smokin hottie… http://www.coverbrowser.com/image/betty-and-veronica/49-1.jpg
This debate has raged on the Internet for several months now. It amazes me how many people make much ado about how they don’t really care about Archie or Jughead or Betty and Veronica, and yet take the time to make posts about them. As Shakespeare wrote in “Hamlet,” “The lady protests too much, methinks.”
Archie first appeared in, ironically, December 1941, the same month that Japan attacked the American Pearl Harbor. Archie and Betty were preteens or very young teens then (Veronica didn’t appear in the first story), but almost immediately were transformed into older teenagers.
Before the Comics Code Authority began in 1954, Archie and his high school friends were a little risque–the girls’ tight tops showed pointed breasts (hinting at nipples); Veronica undressed and changed clothes in the back of a car while Archie was driving; a drawing of a girl (I think Veronica) getting ready to dive showed the comic symbol that would mean her butt was wiggling; etc.
After the code began, breasts got rounder, butts didn’t wiggle, etc.
While fans of Archie and friends are now often thought to be preteens, especially preteen girls, originally the characters were popular with service men fighting overseas in World War II. The stories and characters reminded those in combat of their much safer lives back in high school, when the worst problem they had to face was ending up with two dates for the same dance.
True, Riverdale doesn’t truly represent anyone’s home town or anyone’s teenaged years now or then. But, like Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, it represented what those lonely servicemen could imagine their hometown and teenaged life were like. Archie and friends remain high school teenagers, just as those young servicemen whose lives were lost remained so in memory.
By the way, I’m long past my preteen years, and still like Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica and, to a lesser extent, the rest of the gang. And while I like Bob Montana’s original published drawings, I love Dan DeCarlo’s transformation.
Whatever Betty and Veronica look like, there’s one aspect of their appearance I wish to remain: they look identical, other than their hair. The irony of Archie being torn between two essentially identical twins with opposing personalities is, for me, a major part of the fun of the eternal triangle.
Thanks for your comments Alden! Much insight brought to the discussion. I saw the much discussed issue in store recently and it was torn and unloved.. Unbought. I considered buying it when I realised why I went off Archies as a kid. It was $5 then, and it’s over $10 today. A bit steep…
Yeah your other comments are pretty spot on too…
