=== UPDATE 20th Oct 2006 ===

Welcome Digg Users! I’ve received a lot of good feedback re: this tutorial, so thanks for your input. I’ve taken some of these on board and updated the “final” image. I plan on making the next tutorial a little more in depth, as this has been requested numerous times. As always, comments are welcome.

Accelerated decrepitude

Our aim here is to return an old, though by no means unattractive, woman to her former glory. She may not have walked the catwalks in her youth, but by the end of this tutorial she just might.

Start with a decent, Hi Resolution photograph of an older woman.
Photoshop tutorial: Old Woman

Facial Reconstruction

For the first step, you’ll want to open the liquify tool. Duplicate the layer and then select Filter > Liquify

Begin by lifting areas that have sagged with age - The cheeks, lips, brow & ears. The nose and ears keep growing throughout life, so you’ll want to neaten these up a little.

The Skin-Job

The next step we are going to begin replacing the skin. Though I’ve used a slightly different technique here, I’ll generally start by duplicating the layer, running a strong dust and scratches or blur filter over the image, and then selectively erasing Photoshop Eraser the details. You’ll only want the dust and scratches layer to be about 30% opacity to soften the skin tone.

In this instance I’ve found several skin samples and brush Photoshop Brush colourised them to match the skin, replacing areas panel by panel. I’ve tried not to lose too much of the original skin texture, so while the pores and wrinkles are minimised & softened, the character of the face remains.

Say “Kiss me”

I’ve done a heap of painting around the lips to plump them up, and allow them to catch the light. I’ve also selected the existing hightlights and enhanced them with Image > Adjust > Brightness/Contrast. I’ve then colourised them a little to give a slight gloss lipstick appearance.

Pucker Up!

You Nexus, huh? I design your eyes!

"If only you could see what I’ve seen with your eyes."

The first step I always take with eyes and teeth, is to desaturate them with the Sponge Tool photoshop sponge They’re never white, so careful not to overdo it, but removing yellowed or red eyes is vital. You might also choose to soften or smudge parts of the white to give it a healther look.

With skin grafts & extensive painting, piece by piece I’ve replaced the skin around the eyes to get rid of the “hollowed” look that comes with age. You’ll need to burn photoshop burn or dodge Photoshop Dodge areas to get them just right, but with a bit of persistence, you should be able to get something halfway decent.

Having done that you’ll want to paint Photoshop Brush some eyelashes in one by one, and rework any age damage done to the eyebrows.

You might choose to enhance this beyond strict realism by making the eyes themselves a little more engaging. I’ve chosen to do this by adding a slight blue hue to the eyes. This is a subtle effect, and shouldn’t be overdone.

The Prodigal Daughter Returns!

And voila. The finished result, ready to strut her stuff down the catwalks of Uganda & snort cocaine with Pete Doherty.

Even though adobe is no web design tool, it can still be used very efficiently to create web design templates. These templates sell like hot cakes on the internet. For people who are in this business should look into methods to increase traffic to their site. One way of doing this is by making use of search engine optimization. Another is by using affiliate internet marketing which gives a wide scope of marketing on the internet. Other than affiliate marketing, one can also look into ppc search engines, though these are expensive, they are very effective. Off the topic, for someone who is in this business should also buy software for file backup. The backup software can come very handy to avoid data loss.

Nice tutorial, really well done! Did you use photoshop?

Ah sorry, didn’t read the title properly, was so absorbed in the images :D

Yeah it’s all photoshop… I’ll hopefully expand on the details of this in some future tutorials

The eyes are not done correctly. Good attempt….but the skin loses texture. You have changed it too much. In fact the image does not look real.

    Michelangelo

    AMAZING!!!!!

Of all the modifications done I think the neck shows the most dramatic of changes. You should post something on how you did the neck!

    rock_cannon

impressive…but it is still not perfectly done. exspecially on the eyes. it doesnt looks real. overall still can improve, good job!

Well stay posted… I’ll give “young to old” a go…

I’ve had a few requests, so hopefully I can tackle it.
any source image suggestions? (decent resolution)

    dude what the hell?
you just showed off your work and basically provided zero explanation as to how its done. Note that “Begin by lifting areas that have sagged with age” does not qualify as an instruction.

0/10 on this being a tutorial

Uhm, how the hell did you do the eyebrows.. Did you find some or paint them yourself?

    Whoah! That’s very cool!

This is pretty harsh, likely what the magazines do with their so called models. No wonder why girls have a complex when nobody looks like they do in pictures you see in magazines yet everyone expects that. And for the last guy who commented, you’re a dill hole.

    Steve

The work is definitely interesting, but I do agree that it’s not very realistic. The changes to the subject’s face are so drastic as to make her “younger self” look like a completely different person. Excellent results, regardless.

This is a technique that I’ll test out sometime on some other pictures of older people. Now even my grandparents can be supermodels!

About Ethan and her skin tone - the main area that looks lighter to me is around the mouth. Now, during pregnancy many women develop a noticeable darkish mask framing the mouth - it fades somewhat afterwards but never goes away. (It’s probably more noticeable in white women.) To me, it looks like she’s been Photoshopped to a pre-baby state.

    Hey Sharon,

I wasn’t aware of that particular phenomenon, so thanks for the explanation for the original’s discolouration around the mouth (especially the upper lip) I’ve tried to rectify this by recoloring and evening out the skin tone to better match the overall skin tone.

Regarding the rest of the face, you’ll notice the deep crevices in her face and her pores have been lessened giving less direct shadow (and thus less overall impression of “darkness”)

Skin with more pigment isn’t as susceptible to sub surface scattering (where the light shines into the skin, and emerges illuminating parts of the skin which ordinarily aren’t illuminated - think of how wax appears - thats SSS) so the pores, crevices etc give a much darker appearance.

If skin (of any colour) is greasy, taut, or aged (retains a reasonable layer of dead skin cells) it reflects a lot of the light that hits it head on - direct light. This gives you stronger highlights. Generally you’d try and remove this excessive highlighting when you photograph someone if you’re going for aesthetics because you don’t want to give the impression someone is older, or has greasy skin. You would apply makeup, light them indirectly etc to diffuse the light as it hits the skin. In this instance I’ve done it as a post process in muting the highlights in Photoshop.

So having taken these into account, highlights have been lowered, as well as lessening pores, crevices, wrinkles, you end up with a woman with a relatively even skin tone. Just for kicks, I took them both into photoshop, cropped to the side of the face to get a skin sample, and blurred them to get an average skin tone… Unsuprisingly, after muting the shadows & highlights, the average skin tone of the two is virtually identical.

I hope this clears up a little about how/why I arrived at the skin tones for the final image.

Any other questions are more than welcome.

I live in a senior Community. I have been enhancing photos of the ladies and they seem happy about it. However I know I only use a small amount of the capabilities. Mostley the clone tool. I need a hands on class to help me. Are there any available? John

    Kim

Hi there, I am a Kim Komando junkie. I am also a Photoshop fairly newbie and I think your work is wonderful … I appreciate you sharing this tutorial with us so that we are able to experiment with it. Thanks a million!

    Suzanne

What a great site!! Anything Kim recommends I check out. This was well worth it. Thanks!!

    Gena

I’m a real newbe at this. A friend told me about Adobe Photoshop, I didn’t write the name down so I bought Corel Paint Shop Pro instead. A good program but not what I wanted. Anyway, I just wanted to say, what you did looks great to me!! I may not be able to do it yet, but I have a good eye for what looks great!

Hey I’m glad you’re getting a kick out of it!

Gena: I was just emailing someone who asked about PSP, and I told them there were equivalent tools. The only tool you’ll be missing would be the “liquify” tool, but this can be emulated with PSP’s Mesh “Warp”

John: I’m not too sure about where you can get hands on classes for photoshop, but there are a lot of resources for photoshop (including the other site kim mentioned - it’s great for tutorials). If you ran a message in your local paper, I’ll bet you’d get heaps of people willing to teach you for a small fee. Otherwise, I know many camera clubs/TAFE colleges (or your states equivalent) offer photoshop classes etc.

I realise this tutorial perhaps glosses over the details a little - it’s my first real tutorial, but in the future I hope to address simpler issues (ie, how to fix eyes) in greater detail, so be sure to check back or send me an email and i’ll let you know when I ad new tutorials!

    Gena

First of all, Can my picture be the next image you dip in the fountain of youth?!? I have a pic of me now and one when I was 17, so we could see how ‘right on’ you could make it. ;) I would LOVE it! And… Where are the rich men hiding??? :)

Hey Gena… Thanks for the suggestion but I re…

Oh what the heck! ok sounds fun! - i’d be interested to see how I go with a real case if you’ll let me post the results on this site :)

Make sure they are a decent size/resolution and email them through to lachlanphillips@gmail.com and i’ll see what I can do…

Let me know too if there are any specific sections you would like me to address in the tutorial and I’ll try to be a bit more comprehensive in explaining the process…

Where are the rich men hiding? rich men hide in suits and buildings, and behind middle management :)
I see them in their suits and I want to run up to them, scruffle their hair, cover them in blue paint, dress them up like smurfs and tell them that it’s ok to live for things other than mergers, aquisitions and consolidated revenue.. but thats just me ;)

I can’t afford “CS”, can I get the same effects with Elements 5 ?

    Oomph!

    Incredible! (with Exaggeration :D )

    Ira Cohen:

You should be able to get the same results in elements 5. I’ve never used it, but from what I’ve read you’ll have the same basic toolset as photoshop. In my personal experience, most of my photoshop work is with the airbrush, dodge/burn, layers and liquify tools (and various overlays) all of which should be available in elements 5. If liquify isn’t available, you can use a plugin called “power goo” or a meshwarp type filter.

Excellent tutorial. Can you explain how to created eyebrows and eyelashes. Did you paint them just with a paintbrush?

    Thank you for feedback

    Mojo

you have extensive and amazing skills within photoshop, although the initial image to the final image look like two completely different people. you didnt just give her a facelift but an entire new identity. instead of all that work you should have just cut and pasted a young person on top.

    Ahmed:
The eyebrows & eyelashes are basically painted on one by one. If you use reference photographs you should be able to emulate the look of real eyebrows/lashes given enough time & patience. I could elaborate on how I paint them - perhaps in another tutorial…

    RobK

Nice job. You’ve changed the soft tissues without attempting to remodel teh bony structures underneath (except for the lateral portion of the left brow ridge, which you shortened). As a physician who does a lot of esthetic work, I think that your age regression is probably fairly close.

Could you do an example of age regression on a child to a toddler? I ask, because I have an adopted son and we have no photos earlier than 10 yrs. old for him. I’ve thought about applying his eyes, nose, etc. to a toddler photo of a child who at 10 has his face shape and go from there.

Fire victims already wear a thick NHS version of these and I bet a plastic surgeon or some such bod will create a mask that can give the same effect as photoshop. That’s the only fault of photography…reality gets in the way. Hello, totally amazing what you can do with Photoshop. I can certainly call you a “Digital Magician!” Bravo, good for you. The toturial is mind blowing, but I would have enjoyed more details of screen shots of how you did step by step. That would have been more helpful to me because that is what I look for in tutorials - step by step windows so I can learn and practice on my own. But by no means it doesn’t mean I enjoyed looking at this tutorial. It is super what you can do. Congratulations!

    Bookie

I thought you did an awesome job with the transformation and am totally impressed. I’ve been searching on the Internet and your example is the first one I found that has regressed someone in age. So it must be hard to do, yet you made it seem easy. I’ve tried the liquify filter, but will have to practice with it as I just seem to smoosh the face to pieces!

I have a question for you. A friend has an old photo from the 1800s of a lady. Do you think it’s possible to regress her in age? He asked me if there was any software to do it, but so far I haven’t found any so I’ve been searching to see how to do it in Photoshop. Unfortunately, I’m not that advanced, so I’m trying to find someone who is that may be able to do it.

There is another element here as well; some talent and skill in free hand painting is necessary. Lots of people used brushes but just a few are known “painters

this is amazing. i was trying to try it out myself and i got stuck. when you say you found skin samples and colored them to match do you mean from her face, or from a different pic or something? I normally just use the clone tool copy skin from a nice part of her face, but i was wondering what you meant.

I’d just like to say beautiful work. She still looks like the elder lady, just a much younger better cared for version. Her facial flaws remain just less noticable, and I have seen many African American women with light grayish colored eyes. A beautiful woman both young and old who face bares a million stories to tell.

This tutorial is incredible. You did a great job and obviously you have had a good amount of experience with the program. What pisses me off is how all of a sudden someone writes a smart ass comment about how this tutorial is “insufficient” and begins to critize it. Well, why don’t you try doing something like this and perhaps then you can continue with your smart ass comment. And if you are just a beginner at photoshop, don’t start critisizing either, this site isn’t for you. But anyways, its just so irritating how one person has the audacity to critisize and the rest of these stupid people start doing the same when half the time they don’t know what they’re doing themselves and don’t know what you’re talking about because they know NOTHING about the program!!! So SHUT UP!
Well, anyways, thank you for sharing your great abilities. I look forward to using some of your techniques.

    You LIE

Um, Perhaps you should use a photo of an already famous Ugandan Model as your “AFTER”. Jeez, at least if you’re gonna try to pull the wool over our eyes, do it right. All you did is take a models face and PASTE it over the “before” old lady. SHAME ON YOU!!!

Amazing! Could you do a tutorial for beginners? Please

[…] Dove Commercial Posted on January 4, 2008 by blakejohnson I was looking through Photoshop tutorial sites tonight, a result from my newfound fascination with Photojojo, and found this.  It’s a pretty interesting video, and though Dove uses these goodwill-spirited pieces as their advertising campaigns, I think they deserve credit for the way they’re put together and the fact that they’re shown so openly and liberally.  That’s really what kind of statement it is, anyway, a liberal one.  Anyway, I saw this and wanted to share it, since we’re bombarded with “beauty” and society’s expectations and standards of that beauty all the time.  So here’s the link.  Enjoy (or something… I don’t know if enjoying is really what you’ll do with this). Amazing job!! Congratulations!

    Vo

while it’s a nice makeover, it does not look like the same woman, you made her nose too small and more western, her eyes a different color, i would’ve been more impressed had the picture really looked like a younger version of this woman.. also younger doesn’t allways mean model :p

It is great, wonderful, am so impressive, is a very useful tutorial. thanks.

    Hi

If i send my wife photo can you do this effect for a fee

Very beautiful! What these people do not know, which I have experienced personally, is that going from a young beautiful to a middle aged woman, skin changes, eye color changes, EVERYTHING changes! For a man, such as yourself, to take an older woman beautiful, such as she “should have appeared” in her youth, is truly a work of a genius! And you, Dear Sir, are that GENIUS…Kudos to you and don’t let the players hate on you! You have an eye for beauty and the skill of a master. Keep on and may God bless you with your gift!

This is one of the most amazing things I have ever come across on the web. It’s almost like playing God to turn an old person back to their youthful beauty.
