YouTube Redesign |
September 12th, 2006 |
I see the problems with this design being derived from a lack of cohesion in the metaphor. Buttons and interfaces of this style are always designed to be intuitive, and as such the metaphor is derived from the real world, & real world materials. It is the lack of commitment to that real world metaphor that lets the original design down. It’s not the only design that would work, but a clean design that would sit comfortably with most people, and one that doesn’t detract from the video content

It’s been said that YouTubeâ„¢ users would like the options of choosing from a number of players. I see this as essential for embedding video seamlessly into your own page design. In the mean time however, a little redesign would go a long way.
======= Update 16-09-2006======
YouTubeâ„¢ have since incorporated the volume control as illustrated above, as well as corrected horizontal scaling issues I’ve outlined here. The interface itself is still as clunky as ever, but now it seems that you get a totally different ugly interface depending upon which parts of the site you visit.

Agree. This design is Bad in term of usability =)
I personally don’t like the big circle-shaped slider , prefer it as a thin square
your a nerd. how about some more art from that local octopus, he’s swell!
Sad news about el octo. He suffered horrific facial injuries as a result of trying to make a pop corn omlet. Recessing into a dark corner of his mind to escape the ridicule and isolation, he’s been paralysed by the fear and humiliation resulting from his disfigurement.
It seems we may never get any more artistic genius from the once prolific el octo. Perhaps we should accept that we’re doomed to forever read about potential improvements to video sites for teenaged kids to show off their lip synching abilities while we live off the royalties from our rare el octo prints.
I hate this redesign with a passion. Mostly just the bright red for the progress bar. This really should not be clashing and competing with the video for your attention. It’s essentially peripheral information. They should stick with grey on grey. And I agree the slider button is ugly too. I’m so annoyed. I love youtube, but this pisses me off to no end.
Your redesign is way, way, way better than that ugly thing they just inflicted upon the world.
Hallelujah, seems youtube is paying attention. The website player is still a fright, but the embeddable one is vastly approved. The child-size controls are gone, the progress bar is longer and thinner. And they’ve brought back a volume control that looks EXACTLY like the one suggested here. Well done!
So, wonder what Google will do with YouTube?
Only time will tell.. google’s been working on a new search engine too. I forget what it’s called, but they certainly aren’t putting all their eggs in one basket…
I think google are being very deceptive with their “video” tab on the google main page… it suggests it’s searching the web for videos, but it’s only searching googlevideo for videos…. (and presumably soon youtube)
I don’t reckon google will want to mess with the formula for youtube too much either… murdoch didn’t change myspace because he was afraid of ruining the magic (subsequently it’s gone to shit with some of the ugliest looking pages, and some of the biggest opportunities for spammers ever)
