Yes, yes. It’s all well and good to have it on the interwebs, but what if I want some of the fabulous El Octo on my walls? How do I go about doing this? And can I make payment in cups of tea?
Are you listening here octo? If you can get some hi res pix to me I’ll get some posters done up… and yes Bananna, cups of tea or paypal donations will both be acceptable payment methods. The “Buy Stuff” section is still pretty crude, and I’m hoping to put a few freebies in the “free stuff” section soon enough, but maybe if i had a few more cups of tea I could find the energy to rectify the situation…
BTW octo, I had lunch with a picture framer today and he said “acid free paper? you’re kidding me right?”… You’ll have to work out some better way of making your originals durable… maybe theres some kind of spray or another medium you could use… airtight framing? I don’t know…
Prints I’m thinking we should do limited edition prints on custom hand made paper with custom cast frames… really make them something special… Also glossy posters would be a good idea…
Air tight framing, yeah.. Perhaps i should just FREEZE EVERYTHING I DO IN
FUCKING CARBONITE!
Just think, it’ll last FOREVER!
Here’s the facts bitcloud (and you know em as well as i)…
NOTHING LASTS FOREVER, not you, not me, not oil paintings, not marble sculptures,
not ink on paper, not mountains or oceans or suns or gallaxies.
One day soon you and i will die, and then we wont exist.
Mayby some of our work will, and then it wont.
And then eventually even the memory of us wont exist.
I WANT MY ART TO LAST FOREVER!
I want to last forever, i also want to be loved and famous and rich and powerful
and have a full flowing mane of hair,
but it’s my EGO that wants this
and i try to keep ego out of my art as much as possible, it tends to get in the way of
drawing.
Anyway, if everything lasts forever there’ll be no room left to move, artisticaly or
physicaly.
also
I DON’T FUCKING LIKE the way paint feels.
So there.
Why should i.
Why should i have to use it to be an artist? Where does it say that in the rule book?
(where is that book anyway, it seems to be too big to loose, and growing bigger all the
time?).
My medium is not oil, or stone. It’s paper, and pencil and ink.
I love the way it feels, the high contrast of india ink on white paper, the texture,
its all i know and right now all i need.
And whats more the idea of impermanence = worthless grates on me.
An audience should expect a certain level of durability sure, but when you buy art
what are you paying for? MATERIALS?
“hmmm, sure i like it, it emptys my mind of words and rules and fills it with pure truth,
and i feel temporarily connected with some outside force when i look at it..
But, is that CARDBOARD its painted on?
Sorry, thats going to go a shade of yollow in 50 years. No sale”
My art needs to be made on whatever that is it’s made on, and im not excluding more
permanent mediums. Its just that a picture drawn on paper (or the back seat of a bus) is
just that.
The paper is as much a part of the drawing as the drawing is of the paper.
I wanted to connect that scrap of paper with myself using ink.
I do. The paper is now art. Good, i like it, i may keep it in my wallet, or sell it or
give it to my girlfriend or drop it on the ground.
Mayby i like it so much i put it in a frame, and mayby it looks good in the frame,
or mayby it doesnt.
Mayby i keep it in the frame and call it art or i take it out and
call it what? Paper with ink on it?…
anyway, yeah, custom paper and frames souns nice, but i dont like glossy paper, so the
posters will have to be matte.
Hopefully that will be “special” enough.
No rulebook for art, but there’s a rule book for the site (not a very tight one, but that could have gone in an email rather than clogging up the front page)
If you have an article on the pro’s and cons of permanent vs impermanent mediums, I’m all for it. If you want to debate who’s a better, deeper or more tortured artist because one of us thinks gloss is a cheaper way to give free posters to help people see your work, we can discuss it in the comments, or over email…
Madeleine’s making some papers at the moment, and I was thinking screenprinting some of your stuff onto them and working out how to cure them would be a good move… they would have to be put into a frame because it’s totally impractical to send via post to anyone unless they are in such a medium…
Also, art isn’t worse if it’s semi-permanent, but some of the artworks we have around here have been damaged by mould.. it’s a tragedy… nothing lasts forever, but art is about sharing ideas, emotions and experiences. You might be able to do that with drawings in the sand, or you might not…
anyway, I’ve gotta run off an pick up madz… i want to be able to use the site to have conversations, but i’ve gotta think of how to do it without it clogging up the front page (also the post was messy and your html tags screwed up the sidebar a bit)

Brilliant, Brilliant! What I could see anyway….
I particularly like the pill popping tie!
